The City of Salem is announcing the closure of several trails in Minto-Brown Island Park to accommodate construction activity associated with the Peter Courtney Minto Island Bridge project and to ensure the safety of park users. This closure will be in effect Thursday and Friday (August 18 and 19, 2016) and Monday through Thursday (August 22--25, 2016). The trails will be open Saturday and Sunday for use during this construction period.

The closure will allow construction vehicles to pave the paths associated with the bridge construction on the Minto-Brown Island side of the bridge.

The following trails segments will be closed:

* North and east legs of the Red Loop Trail
* River Trail section that will dead end where it turns east
* Gravel path between Parking Lot #3 and the River Trail

These closure sections are shown on the attached map.

Construction activity in portions of Minto-Brown Park will continue through fall. Visitors to the park should continue to remain alert for construction vehicles. For updates on construction activity, including to sign up for regular email communication, please visit www.cityofsalem.net/mintobridge.

News Release from City of Salem
Posted on FlashAlert: August 9th, 2016 8:49 AM

Construction will begin this week to restore the asphalt pavement on Mission Street SE between Commercial Street SE and 12th Street SE. The project will include milling and removing portions of the existing pavement and providing a new asphalt surface and other corrective measures.

New pavement lane markings and curb ramps will be included to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. A bicycle crossing signal and shared use path improvements will also be added at Winter Street SE.

This project is being funded by the City's share of State Gas Tax Revenues.

Most of the work will occur nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, beginning August 14, 2016. Some work on curbs, ramps, and driveways will be done during the day. We apologize in advance for the noise and inconvenience resulting from this project.

River Road S will be closed from Owens Street S to Minto Island Road S beginning August 13, 2016, to allow for improvements to the slope along a section of River Road S. The closure may last up to nine days.

This section of River Road S has a number of trees along the crest of the slope that have become undermined, and could fall on the roadway. The work involves removing trees and brush from the top and face of the slope, and removing unstable loose rock and soil. This project is similar to the work completed last year just north of the current site.

Vehicular traffic will be detoured along a route that follows Commercial Street SE, Liberty Street S, Madrona Avenue SE, and Croisan Creek Road S (see attached map).

Pedestrians and bicyclists who need a way around the road closure to Minto-Brown Island Park may take a temporary alternate route across the railroad at Kearney Street S, and along the Willamette Slough.

Pedestrians and bicyclists taking this route need to be cautious in crossing the railroad tracks, and should be advised that the alternate route is a gravel road to the park (see attached map).
