Sandbagging Sites Established in Salem

News Release from: City of Salem
SANDBAGGING SITES ESTABLISHED IN SALEM
Posted: December 3rd, 2012 4:21 PM

Due to the possibility of local flooding occurring over the next few days, the City of Salem Public Works Department has set up 11 temporary satellite sandbagging locations as follows:

West Salem
* Orchard Heights Park--Upper Parking Lot
* Roth's--1130 Wallace Road NW
* Park and Ride--Wallace Road NW--entrance north of Brush College Road NW

South Salem
* Bush's Pasture Park--Parking lot off Lefelle Street SE--lower lot near baseball field
* Fred Meyer, South Salem--3450 Commercial Street SE
* Wal-Mart, South Salem--5250 Commercial Street SE
* Courthouse Athletic Club--6250 Commercial Street SE
* Salem Chinese Evangelical Church--6836 Sunnyside Road SE

Southeast Salem
* Home Depot Hagers Grove--3795 Hagers Grove Road SE
* Lowe's Home Improvement Center--1930 Turner Road SE

Central/North Salem
* Olinger Pool--1310 A Street NE

As always, sand and sandbags are available at the City's Operations Division Complex located at 1420 20th Street SE.

The City will also deliver sand to private property upon request.

Salem residents can also help prevent local flooding when heavy rains and lots of leaves combine to clog storm drains. Simply rake leaves that have fallen in the street to the lower side of the storm drains. This helps prevent clogging until City street-sweeping crews come to your neighborhood.

Please report any local flooding or down trees to Salem Public Works Dispatch at 503-588-6333.

Annual Fall Leaf Haul ~ Saturday December 1, 9am to 3pm

This is an effort to recruit volunteers to help out at the annual Fall Leaf Haul.  This is a one day leaf disposal event for Salem citizens.  The event is free but we do ask for cash and food donations which go directly to the Marion & Polk Food Share and Parks Tradition Fund.

This year the Fall Leaf Haul takes place on Saturday December 1, 9am to 3pm at the following locations...

- Sprague High School

- Oregon State Fairgrounds

- Wallace Marine Park

This is a longstanding community event and the number of participants has dropped noticeably the last 3 or 4 years.  Volunteers are needed to help citizens unload leaves from their vehicles into a huge pile on the pavement.  Equipment then picks up the leaves and loads them into containers which get hauled away and recycled.  The job is dirty, it's usually cold, and it pays nothing, but everyone involved has a good time and many people in the community benefit from this event.  And besides...the Civil War is played the weekend before so there's no excuse not to participate!

I'm sending flyers and sign up sheets to Neighborhood Association Chairs, so please discuss this in your November meetings.  Interested volunteers can call me directly or sign up with your Neighborhood Association.

Thank you for your time.  Have a great and safe Holiday season...

Friends of Secor Park

                             Friends of Secor Park

SALEM, OR - Join Salem's Parks Department, the Marion Soil and Water Conservation District, and Marion County Weed Control District for a project at Secor Park.

WHEN: Saturdays, October 13th, 20th and 27th from 9.a.m. to 12 p.m. at Secor Park.

WHERE: 5453 Liberty Road South - connected to Crossler Middle School.

Secor Neighborhood Park, with its rolling meadows, and mature-growth trees, is a piece of nature in the city. However, the dirt trails are narrow and need to be cleaned up, and the forested area is becoming overrun with English ivy, Himalayan blackberries and Shiny geranium. We are asking the community come together to improve this public land by re-establishing the trails system and removing noxious weeds from the forest and creek.

Participants should wear sturdy shoes and clothes for working outside. If the weather is wet, rain gear is helpful. Tools will be provided at check-in, and volunteers will receive instructions on removal techniques and safety procedures.

To register or ask questions, please e-mail secorpark@gmail.com.

For more information about noxious  weeds: http://www.co.marion.or.us/PW/Operations/weeds/

Walk-ins are welcome on the days of the project.

Need help with Jog-a-thon packets

Hello Parents,

Once again we have a need for your assistance. On September 24th(Monday) at 9:30 am in the media center we will prepare the jog-a-thon packets. Please bring a stapler and a staple remover. We will be putting flyers on the envelopes that will go out Sept 28th for the kids to take home and get pledges. That will give families two weeks before the jog-a-thon to collect their funds.

Many hands will make light work as we have 510 envelopes to get ready.

Thanks ahead of time for your help, we couldn't do this without your support!!!

School Report

Ms. Prats reported that we currently have 506 students.  Our school received a .5 FTE to help out with the blend classrooms.  Mr. Tobias is still at OHSU after suffering an aneurism just before school began.  He is scheduled for surgery this Thursday and is in all of our thoughts and prayers.  Rachel Parks was hired to help while Mr. Tobias is out, she is a well respected teacher who has substituted for our school before and we welcome her to Sumpter during this time.  The Parent Handbook that was in the 1st day packets to students is a new addition and she is hoping we as parents find it informative.  She also handed out copies of the district strategic plan.  One thing about parking at our school, if people would please not park on Rockwood across from the main driveway of the school as it makes the street too tight for traffic to flow and buses are having a hard time making it through the tight squeeze.  Thank you for not parking on the red zones in the parking lot.  She did ask that if any parent is feeling their child is having a problem to please address it with the teacher as soon as possible so the situation can be rectified.

Other Business

We are in search of a new secretary for Parent Club.  This position would take minute notes at the monthly meeting and prepare them to be sent out via email.  If you are interested in this position please contact us via email.

If anyone is interested in helping with the yearbook please contact Patrick Hurley.

June 2012 Sumpter Parent Club//Meeting minutes

Hello Sumpter Community!

See attached final meeting notes for 2011-2012 Parent Club.  We hope these notes have been useful for you through the year.

Now that school is out, we wanted to try to keep a little continuity for the new Parent Club President, Annette Brown.  Instead of recreating this email list again next year, we would like to continue with it.  If you have a student who is transferring to a middle school, or to Battle Creek, or no longer affiliated with the school and would like to be removed altogether, please let us know and we will remove you.  Otherwise, we will keep this list going.  Again, thank you so much for your support over the past year.

See you next fall.  Have a great summer!

Summer 2012 Construction-Related School Closures in South Gateway

Sumpter Elementary School will be closed for the summer because of renovations and repairs occurring at the school, and we need your help in getting the word out. Please share this information with community members. The school building will be a construction zone and all public access will be blocked to ensure a safe environment.

This summer work is exciting news for the district, students, teachers, and community members. When the school reopens this fall, there will be new flooring and HVAC system.

All this repair work is thanks to the support of our local voters who approved a $242.1 million construction bond measure in November 2008 to help repair and renovate more than half the schools in Salem-Keizer, as well as build four new schools in key areas in our community.

How can community members contact Sumpter Elementary office staff during the summer?
Sumpter Elementary office staff will be located at Lee Elementary School at 5650 Venice Street SE from June 19-27. The phone number will be the same as Sumpter’s main phone and fax numbers: (503) 399–3337 and fax: (503) 391-4080. Summer hours are 8:00–4:00 pm.

The office will re-open on August 13 at the temporary summer location at Lee Elementary.

Lee Elementary is less than 10 minutes from here:

1.        Head west on Rockwood St SE toward Valleywood Dr SE

2.       Turn right onto Valleywood Dr SE

3.       Turn right onto Lone Oak Rd SE

4.      Take the 2nd right onto Kuebler Blvd

5.       Turn right onto Battle Creek Rd S

6.      Turn left onto Avalon Ave S

If community members would like to more information about the construction occurring during the summer or want to track progress as our district implements the construction bond, they can view the district’s construction website at: http://www.salkeiz.k12.or.us/content/bond-updates.

In addition, because Sumpter Elementary will be closed, we will not be renting space to individuals or community groups at this location. We appreciate anything you can do to help us spread the word so that our community members have adequate time to relocate their activities.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and support as we work with one another to deal with the inconveniences that construction brings to our community. But we hope you join us in welcoming the improvements to Sumpter Elementary in the fall of 2012.
