Summer 2012 Construction-Related School Closures in South Gateway

Sumpter Elementary School will be closed for the summer because of renovations and repairs occurring at the school, and we need your help in getting the word out. Please share this information with community members. The school building will be a construction zone and all public access will be blocked to ensure a safe environment.

This summer work is exciting news for the district, students, teachers, and community members. When the school reopens this fall, there will be new flooring and HVAC system.

All this repair work is thanks to the support of our local voters who approved a $242.1 million construction bond measure in November 2008 to help repair and renovate more than half the schools in Salem-Keizer, as well as build four new schools in key areas in our community.

How can community members contact Sumpter Elementary office staff during the summer?
Sumpter Elementary office staff will be located at Lee Elementary School at 5650 Venice Street SE from June 19-27. The phone number will be the same as Sumpter’s main phone and fax numbers: (503) 399–3337 and fax: (503) 391-4080. Summer hours are 8:00–4:00 pm.

The office will re-open on August 13 at the temporary summer location at Lee Elementary.

Lee Elementary is less than 10 minutes from here:

1.        Head west on Rockwood St SE toward Valleywood Dr SE

2.       Turn right onto Valleywood Dr SE

3.       Turn right onto Lone Oak Rd SE

4.      Take the 2nd right onto Kuebler Blvd

5.       Turn right onto Battle Creek Rd S

6.      Turn left onto Avalon Ave S

If community members would like to more information about the construction occurring during the summer or want to track progress as our district implements the construction bond, they can view the district’s construction website at: http://www.salkeiz.k12.or.us/content/bond-updates.

In addition, because Sumpter Elementary will be closed, we will not be renting space to individuals or community groups at this location. We appreciate anything you can do to help us spread the word so that our community members have adequate time to relocate their activities.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and support as we work with one another to deal with the inconveniences that construction brings to our community. But we hope you join us in welcoming the improvements to Sumpter Elementary in the fall of 2012.

Sumpter Info

Hang on, we're almost to the end of the school year!!!!  I wanted to pass on some information and volunteer opportunities to help us finish strong. So here we go...

Community FUNdraiser.  This was a huge success.  Thank all of you for contributing to the classroom baskets, buying raffle tickets and attending the event.  It looks like we will net close to $8000.  Thank you for your support.

Parent Club.  Our last meeting will by June 5th at 6:45pm (This is the first Tuesday of the month due to school being out the following week).  At this meeting we plan on reviewing the past year and setting priorities for the next year.  We will be discussing a contribution to the Battle Creek Parent Club and funding requests for classroom technology in addition to other items we have traditionally funded such as classroom funds, fieldtrips, and artists in residence.

Yearbooks.  We are currently planning on selling Yearbooks before and after school from June 4th through June 8th.  We also plan to sell them at the school BBQ on June 6th.  Yearbooks will only be $5.00 this year.  Our Yearbook Committee did a great job this year so make sure you buy your copy before they are all gone.

June 6th is the school-sponsored BBQ.  I still need two more volunteers who might be able to help serve food from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.  If you've always wanted to wear a hair net and gloves, this is your chance!  Please reply to me at plhurley@hotmail.com.

Important BBQ info:  We will begin selling BBQ tickets at 9:00 am.  Students will be able to use their lunch cards if they have them.  Sumpter Student price is $1.85.  Adults will NOT be able to use their students' lunch card to pay for the meal.  The adult price is $3.00.  Please try to bring exact change.

June 11th is Field Day (And the last day of school).  Mrs Morris needs lots and lots and lots of help for this fun event for our children.  There is a signup and more information at the front desk.  As with all volunteering at Sumpter, you will need to have a background check completed prior to volunteering.  Background check forms are available on the Parent Club board by the front desk.

Boxtops - Please continue to bring in your boxtops! We have made almost $2,000 for our school this year with boxtops! Great work!

Yearbook
We have collected some 5th grade baby pictures from the parents of your students. We have only received about 20 so far and are concerned that more parents/5th grade students may like to have their baby picture included and haven't submitted them yet. The deadline was two days ago but we would like to extend the due date to May 1st !!! We would like to have parents email those digital baby pictures to the following email address: tawnigall@gmail.com. If the parents do not have digital photographs, they can put the baby photograph in an envelope with their teacher's name (also please include the student's name) and bring it to the office and ask the office staff to put it in the "Parent Club Box". This way we can scan the photo ourselves and have them returned to the correct teacher's box.

If you have 5th Grade Band, Field Trip or Assembly pictures (i.e. Magician, Chinese acrobats, etc) that you would like to be considered for the Yearbook please email them to Tawni Gall (tawnigall@gmail.com) or place them on a CD and give them to the office staff to be put in the Parent Club box. Please include the grade and the name of the event when you submit photos.

Crossler Parent Club Info

The Crossler Parent Club would like to invite any parents of 5th grade students who will be attending Crossler to their meetings. They will be having meetings:

Monday, May 14 at 4:00 pm in the Crossler library

Monday, June 11 at 4:00 pm in the Crossler library

They will be electing officers at the May meeting.  If anyone is interested in attending, or would like to run for office, please attend. Michelle McCallister is the new president.
